Es una escritora estadounidense de literatura infantil, conocida sobre todo por su obra El dador. Ha vivido en distintas partes de todo el mundo. Comenzó su carrera como fotógrafa y periodista independiente en la década de 1970. Su trabajo llamó la atención de Houghton Mifflin, que la animó a escribir su primer libro infantil. Autora de más de 30 libros para jóvenes lectores. Ha recibido innumerables premios, entre ellos la prestigiosa medalla Newbery por El Dador de recuerdos. Vive entre Cambridge y una antigua granja de Maine.
